Free first look — 20 seconds

Paste the bill.

The statement, the itemized bill, or the explanation of benefits. Leave out account numbers if you like.

Free. Takes a few seconds.

How it works

Twenty seconds. Then one precise question.

01

Paste it

Bill, EOB or collection letter. Nothing is saved.

02

Read it in plain words

Every line translated, the ones worth a question flagged, with the exact question.

03

Send one letter

The billing-question letter, insurer script, or validation request — in the full version.

Why this exists

The bill is written in code on purpose. The questions are simple.

Five-digit codes, 'adjustments', three kinds of patient responsibility — and a due date. Most overcharges die when someone asks one precise question. This gives you the plain-English translation and the question.

Common questions

Is this legal or medical advice?

No. What's This Bill? can be wrong and is not legal, medical or insurance advice. It never decides a charge is improper — it gives you the exact question to ask the biller or insurer. Confirm anything important with them, in writing.

Is it really free? Is what I paste stored?

The first look at your bill is free, and nothing you paste is stored. The full version, including the letter you can send, is $9 per bill, or $4.99 per month for the family plan.

I don't understand the codes and terms on my bill or EOB — what does the tool do?

It walks through terms like CPT/procedure code, allowed amount, adjustment, deductible, copay, coinsurance and EOB in one plain line each, using the description on your bill itself. It won't tell you a code means something beyond what your bill already says.

I got an out-of-network or emergency bill and I have insurance — what should I check?

If it's for emergency care or certain out-of-network ancillary care, the federal No Surprises Act (see CMS — No Surprises) may protect you from most balance billing — call your insurer first using the number on your card. If you're uninsured, ask about your Good Faith Estimate right instead.

A debt collector contacted me about a medical bill — what can I do?

You can request written validation of the debt within 30 days of the collector's first contact (see CFPB — debt collection). Medical debt also has specific credit-reporting protections, so it's worth checking with consumerfinance.gov. This isn't legal advice — confirm your options with a professional if you're unsure.
